Toyota Motor is exploring the use of small drones to assist its off-road vehicles in challenging terrain. According to a recent filing with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Japanese automaker is developing a drone-based support system that would enhance driver awareness in situations where visibility is limited.

The proposed drone system would be capable of launching from and landing on the vehicle, providing a real-time aerial view of the surrounding environment. The drone could help identify obstacles, water crossings, or terrain hazards, allowing drivers to make safer and more informed decisions.

Toyota said the drone will mostly operate within the line of sight of the vehicle, but may ascend above tree level when needed to provide a broader perspective. The concept is still in the early stages of development, and Toyota has not announced any plans for commercialization.

Industry analysts note that this initiative reflects the growing convergence of drone and automotive technologies, as manufacturers look for innovative ways to improve vehicle safety and driver assistance systems.
